Actress Kim Kumsoon touched the viewers with maternal love for her daughter's happiness
In the 14th episode of tvN’s weekend drama Love Next Door (directed by Yoo Jewon, written by Shin Haeun, produced by Studio Dragon & The Modori), which aired on the 29th, actress Kim Kumsoon portrayed Do Jae-sook, a mother who opposes the love between her daughter Jung Mo-eum (played by Kim Jieun) and Kang Dan-ho (played by Yoon Jion).
Earlier, Jae-sook learned that Dan-ho had feelings for Mo-eum. In a heartfelt and emotional scene, Jae-sook told Mo-eum, "Don’t live a life like mine, full of twists and turns. I want you to meet a man with a long life and have lovely children, watching them grow up together as you both age side by side. I want you to live a simple, happy life," and strongly opposed the relationship.
Despite her usual affection for Dan-ho’s daughter Kang Yeon-du (played by Shim Jiyoo), Jae-sook intentionally distanced herself, hardening her stance. However, after hearing Mo-eum's words, "I’m happy now. Everything I do, including liking you and wanting to be with Yeon-du, is because I want to be even happier," Jae-sook was deeply moved and eventually came to accept the relationship.
Kim Kumsoon, in the role of Do Jae-sook, convincingly portrayed the complex emotions of a mother who opposes her daughter’s challenging love because she wants her happiness above all. In a particularly poignant moment, Jae-sook softly muttered, "Why would you carry a bundle of straw and walk into the fire when life is hard enough even on a silk road?" Later, after seeing the happy moments of Mo-eum, Dan-ho, and Yeon-du, Jae-sook’s decision to accept their love was expressed through a strong and warm gaze, resonating deeply with viewers.
Kim Kumsoon skillfully brings depth to the role, sometimes unleashing her character’s suppressed emotions, while at other times completing the narrative of her character with just her eyes and facial expressions, enhancing the drama’s immersion.
