Actress #KimKumsoon Won New Actress Award at the 23rd Director’s Cut Awards
Her agency, Saram Entertainment, stated, “At the 23rd Director’s Cut Awards held on the 20th, actress Kim Kumsoon was honored with the New Actress Award in the film category for her performance in Star of Ulsan.”
The Director’s Cut Awards is a film ceremony where members of the Directors Guild of Korea (DGK) select and present awards. It has continued its legacy as a joyful and casual celebration of filmmakers, with nominees and winners determined through votes by Korean film directors.
Kim Kumsoon was named the winner for her lead role as “Yoonhwa” in Star of Ulsan. Accepting the trophy with a round of hearty applause, she said, “I’m not a new actress, but I’m very grateful to be called one. I share this award with Director Jung Kihyuk and the crew who endured the cold weather with warm hearts during the filming of Star of Ulsan. Thank you.”
In Star of Ulsan, Kim portrays Yoonhwa, a woman in her 50s working at a shipyard and supporting her family. From tenaciously leading her household to portraying the despair of a middle-aged woman who is suddenly laid off from the shipyard where she shed blood and sweat, Kim delivers a powerful and heartfelt performance. She vividly captures the cracks forming in Yoonhwa’s carefully maintained daily life and her anguish in response, earning high praise. This performance also won her the Actor of the Year award at the 27th Busan International Film Festival.
With both the Actor of the Year award at the 27th BIFF and the New Actress Award at the 23rd Director’s Cut Awards under her belt, Kim Kumsoon has achieved two major honors for her work in Star of Ulsan. Her realistic, detailed acting that brings characters to life has earned her acclaim with every project, heightening anticipation for what’s next.
